Aerating and Overseeding Your Lawn
To maintain a beautiful, healthy and lush turf it’s important to aerate and overseed your lawn on an annual basis. Aeration is the process of removing cores of soil from the lawn using a piece of equipment called an aerator. This process opens up the lawn allowing more air, water and nutrients to penetrate deeper into the soil and root zone which encourages a thicker, deeper root system. Thicker roots equate to thicker grass and thicker grass equates to fewer weeds. There are many benefits to aerating your lawn, including:
- Reduces soil compaction
- Enhances water and fertilizer uptake
- Increases activity of soil microorganisms which decompose thatch
- Reduces weed growth
Overseeding is simply planting new grass seed over existing turf. Overseeding uses a slit-seeder to drop seed and cut a groove into the soil about ΒΌ inch deep creating good seed-to-soil contact and germination rates for a thicker lawn. The best time to do this is after aerating your lawn. Some of the benefits to overseeding include:
- Thicker, healthier turf
- Reduces weed growth
- Improves drought tolerance
- Improves lawn color
